The ‘Sengol’, received in 1947 by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to represent the transfer of power from the British and kept in a museum in Allahabad, has been installed in the new Parliament building.

  • Historical Significance

    • Symbol of power transfer: During the transfer of power from British rule to Indian independence, Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India, asked Jawaharlal Nehru about the symbolic ceremony representing this transition.

    • Artistic Excellence: The creation of the Sengol showcased the craftsmanship and artistry of Chola-era goldsmiths and jewellers, emphasizing their artistic achievements through intricate designs.

    • Symbol of power: Representing the Dharma Danda (sceptre of justice), served as a powerful symbol reminding monarchs that the highest authority resided in Dharma, the ethical and spiritual order.

    • Historical Documentation: The Sengol is a significant historical artifact aiding researchers and historians in studying Chola power transitions, offering valuable insights into the era's political and cultural practices.

  • Cultural Significance

    • Values: ‘Sengol’ is derived from Tamil word ‘semmai’, which means righteousness.

    • Cultural Heritage: The Sengol reflects the rich cultural heritage of ancient India, particularly the Chola Empire. It provides insights into the political, social, and religious aspects of the Chola civilization.

    • Ritual and Tradition: The Sengol exchange was a significant ceremonial act, sanctifying power transfer and symbolizing blessings from high rulers, upholding Chola traditions.

    • Tourists Attraction: The Sengol, along with sites like the Brihadeeswarar Temple, attracts tourists exploring India's architectural heritage, benefiting tourism and local economies.

By placing the Sengol in the new parliament, we bridge cultural traditions and modernity, transcending political affiliations. It symbolizes justice, fairness, and serves as a constant reminder to uphold the rule of law
