The Kashmir Fisheries Department plans to reintroduce brown trout into the Valley’s cold-water streams after over a century.
Habitat: Prefers cool, well-oxygenated freshwater, often hiding in stream crevices.
Size: 15–22 inches long, 1–5 pounds.
History: Introduced in 1900 by Frank J. Mitchel, a British carpet factory owner.
Comparison: Unlike rainbow trout, brown trout thrives only in the wild, not farms.
