Vijayanagara Architecture was heavily borrowed from earlier dynasties of the region

Published on 12 Sep 2025

Vijayanagara architecture is a vibrant combination of the Chalukya, Hoysala, Pandya, and Chola styles, which evolved from prior empires in earlier centuries. It is also influenced by later Deccan and Dravidian styles. Preferred for its durability, local hard granite was the building material of choice, as it had been for the Badami Chalukyas.

  • Chalukya and Hoysala Influences: Elements such as intricate carvings, decorative pillars, and intricate vimanas were inspired by the Chalukya architecture, particularly the Badami Chalukya style. The Hoysala influence can be seen in the ornate and detailed sculptural work, including intricate sculptures of gods, goddesses, and mythological scenes.

    • Example: The Vittala temple

  • Dravidian Architecture: The towering gopuras, vimanas, pillared halls, and large courtyards of Vijayanagara temples are characteristic features of the Dravidian style. This architectural style was further refined and embellished during the Vijayanagara period.

    • Example: Virupaksha temple

  • Pallava and Chola Influences: The intricate bas-reliefs and sculptures seen in Vijayanagara temples share similarities with those found in Pallava and Chola temples. The rock-cut architecture of the Pallavas, seen at sites like Mahabalipuram, influenced the Vijayanagara rock-cut temples in Hampi.

    • Example: Virupaksha temple

  • Islamic Influences: Incorporated certain Islamic architectural elements due to cultural exchange with neighboring sultanates. The arch on the gateway leading into the fortified settlement as well as the dome over the gate is regarded as typical features of the architecture introduced by the Turkish Sultans.

    • Example: The Vittala temple

  • Pandya Influences: Hampi Stone chariot is influenced by Rathas made in Mahabalipuram by Pandyas.

    • Example: Dharmarayarath, Draupadi Rath etc.
