Influence of Mauryan architecture on subsequent architectural styles

The architectural achievements of the Mauryan Empire, particularly under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka, had a profound influence on subsequent dynasties and architectural styles in ancient India.

  • Post Mauryan stupa: These stupas retained the essential features of Mauryan stupas while incorporating regional and stylistic variations.

    • Example: Amaravati Stupa built during the Satavahana period.

  • Pillars: The smooth shafts and elaborated capitals of Ashokan pillars set a precedent for subsequent pillars.

    • Example: Iron pillar at Delhi which belonged to Gupta era had structural features and decorative motifs similar to Mauryan pillars

  • Rock cut architecture: The intricate carvings, sculptural reliefs, and architectural layouts of the Mauryan caves served as a foundation for the development of more elaborate rock-cut structures.

    • Example: Ajanta caves under Vakatakas had Mauryan cave influence.

  • Palace architecture: The concept of palace complexes with elaborate layouts, ornate gateways, integration of garden and water features and grand halls influenced the architectural designs of later dynasties.

  • Cave temples: Post Mauryan cave temples expanded on the Mauryan cave temple features and incorporated intricate sculptures which suited the social and religious beliefs of the time.

  • Architecture in Southeast Asia: The spread of Buddhism to southeast Asia also resulted in spread of Buddhism 

    • Example: Borobudur temple of Indonesia.
