The Chalukyas (6th CE - 12th CE) were ardent supporters of architecture. They invented the vesara style while constructing structural temples. Chalukyan architecture is a hybrid of Nagara and Dravida styles, and hence a superb example of Vesara architecture. Some of its features is:

  • Shikhara: In Chalukya architecture, the shikhara is typically of the Nagara style, characterized by a curvilinear shape.

  • Vimana: Chalukya temples often feature vimanas with multiple stories, known as the "tower within a tower" concept.

  • Example: Mallikarjuna Temple in Pattadakal, which has a multi-tiered vimana adorned with intricate carvings.

  • Mandapa: Chalukya architecture includes mandapas with intricately carved pillars.

  • Example: Kasivisvesvara Temple in Lakkundi, Karnataka, showcases a beautifully crafted open mandapa with exquisite carvings on its pillars.

  • Garbhagriha: In Chalukya architecture, the garbhagriha is typically square-shaped and features intricate sculptures and relief work.

  • Ornate Sculptures: Chalukya architecture is renowned for its intricate sculptures, which adorn the exteriors and interiors of temples. These sculptures depict gods, goddesses, celestial beings, and various mythological scenes.
