Concept of National language
India is a land home to diverse languages and in order to respect and protect these diversities the constitution has identified 22 languages as scheduled languages with none being categorized as the national language. As per Article 343(1), Hindi written in Devanagari script and English are the official languages within the nation. Over the years there have been demands for recognizing Hindi as the national language which has been opposed by regional units.
Advantages associated with having a national language (One nation, one language)

Concerns associated with national language policy
Marginalization of non-Hindi speakers: The non-Hindi speakers, who account for 57% of the population, would feel alienated within the nation affecting the social fabric.
Example: Feelings of alienation would rise among South Indian, Northeast people and the tribals.
Resentment and protest: The fear of getting assimilated into the majority and losing their identity would lead to protests by the minority community which affects national solidarity.
Example: The anti-Hindi protest when the Official language act was passed in 1963.
Impact on education: Promotion of a single language as national language affects education of students who rely upon regional languages
Example: Protest in North Indian states against compulsory Hindi learning till class 10.
Denial of opportunity: The regional language speakers would be at a disadvantage while looking for jobs or other career-oriented programmes.
Vulnerability among tribals: Tribal language and their culture are used on a very small scale and singular focus on Hindi would lead to the extinction of many of these languages.
Example: According to UNESCO, 197 languages in India are categorized as endangered, with the majority of them being of tribal origin.
Political complexity: Many regional parties have been formed based on linguistic identity that would brutally oppose such an initiative.
Example: Protests led by DMK against any government measure to promote Hindi.
Practical inconvenience: Due to the vastness of the number of languages, the scope of implementing such a policy is very difficult.
Example: According to the latest analysis of census, India has 121 languages spoken by more than 10000 people and these 121 languages have 270 distinct mother tongues.
Government has been pushing for the promotion of Hindi in the name of national unity but it should not lead to federal imbalance of the nation's polity. These measures shall not create a sense of vulnerability among the minority and lead to loss of opportunity for them. Ensuring the protection of cultural diversity is crucial for upholding the integrity of the nation.
