Biological Oxygen Demand

Chemical Oxygen Demand

Definition

It is the quantity of oxygen needed by the microorganisms to decompose organic materials in an aerobic environment.

It is the entire amount of oxygen needed for chemical oxidation to break down organic materials.

Significance

  • It oxidizes the natural organic matter and organic waste in the water.

  • It is a general indicator of water quality.

  • Used in wastewater treatment plants to decay the organic wastes

  • It gives an estimate of the impact an effluent will have on the water body.

  • It is a general indicator of water quality

  • A comprehensive parameter in water quality assessment, providing an indication of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable pollutants.
