Plastic-Eating Fungi

• Scientists in Germany have identified plasticeating fungi, including Aspergillus and Pestalotiopsis, that could help tackle plastic pollution.

• These fungi are particularly effective at breaking down polyurethane, commonly used in construction foam.

• Research at Lake Stechlin showed that some microfungi can degrade synthetic polymers when no other carbon source is available.
