• The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) argues that uranium concentrations up to 60 µg/l in drinking water are safe.
• This is despite the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) setting a limit of 30 µg/l in 2021, aligning with WHO guidelines.
• BARC contends that the WHO’s 30 µg/l standard is a guideline, not a safety limit, and criticises BIS for not conducting health impact studies before adopting it.
• BARC also notes that adhering to the BIS standard would increase purification costs without providing additional health benefits
