Vaikom Satyagraha at the princely state of Travancore. lasted for 604 days from March 30, 1924 to November 23, 1925 marked the dawn of the temple entry movement across India.
Background
The people of the oppressed classes, especially the Ezhavas were prohibited from walking on the roads surrounding the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple.
It was started under the leadership of T.K. Madhavan, K. Kelappan, and K.P. Kesava Menon.
Subsequently it was taken up by the Congress Untouchability Committee formed by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee in January 1924.
The Satyagraha and aftermath
On every day of protest, three volunteers from three different communities were sent to walk on the prohibited roads and were arrested.
National leaders such as Periyar, C Rajagopalachari and Mahatma Gandhi came to Vaikom to offer support and lead protestors.
Finally, three of the four roads were thrown open to all castes and Satyagraha was withdrawn.
In November 1936, the historic Temple Entry Proclamation was signed by the Maharaja of Travancore.
