IPDMA was announced at the 2022 Quad Leaders’ Summit in Tokyo.
It is a technology and training initiative to ensure safety and security of the critical sea lanes.
IPMDA harnesses innovative technology, such as commercial satellite radio frequency data collection, to provide the partners with real-time information on activities occurring in maritime zones.
It enhances the ability to detect and respond to a wide range of challenges involving illicit maritime activities such as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, climate events, and humanitarian crises.
The initiative also involves regional information centres, helping to establish a common operating picture of the maritime domain across the Indo-Pacific region.
QUAD intends to implement IPDMA in the Indian Ocean Region soon.
The expansion is supported by the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram.
The Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR)
The Indian Navy established the IFC-IOR in 2018 at Gurugram.
The IFC-IOR is located within the premises of the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC).
IMAC is the nodal agency for maritime data fusion set up after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
It is set to be upgraded into the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NDMA) centre in the near future.
It works with partners, countries as well as international agencies; to enhance maritime security and safety.
It helps to effectively keep track of the shipping traffic as well as other critical developments in the region under a collaborative framework.
It hosts Liaison Officers from partner countries.
