A superabsorbent polymer (SAP), also known as slush powder, is a type of hydrophilic material that can absorb and retain significant quantities of liquid compared to its own weight.
SAP absorption increases with deionized and distilled water than saline water, and the swelling ratio can reach 1000:1 order.
SAPs are made from polymerising a mixture of acrylic acid, sodium hydroxide (or a similar neutralising agent) and water plus a cross linker.
Applications: Personal hygiene products, improve water retention in soil, control water run-off, absorb hazardous waste spills, medical dressing, food packaging etc.
