SSAS is a small deposit scheme by the Government of India exclusively for a girl child.
Launched on January 22, 2015, as part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.
Notified by the government on December 14, 2014, it encourages parents to save for their daughter's future education and marriage costs.
The scheme comes with income-tax benefits under section 80C.
According to the scheme, a guardian can open an account for a girl child immediately after her birth until she turns 10 years old.
Each girl child is allowed only one account.
Parents can open a maximum of two accounts if they have two daughters.
The account holder gets an interest rate, which is regulated by the Ministry of Finance on a quarterly basis.
