An under construction multipurpose project on the Godavari river near Polavaram village in Eluru District in Andhra Pradesh
The project has been given National project status by the Union Government of India.
It facilitates lifting 80 TMC ft. water from the Godavari river to the Krishna river through its Right Main Canal (RMC) and a Left Main Canal (LMC) to bring water to Visakhapatnam.
It is based on the 1980 recommendations of Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT).
The project will confer benefits in the upland areas of Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna Districts.
The project will create a dam with Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of +45.72 m (+150 ft) and will submerge some villages of Chhattisgarh and Odisha States.
The two main canals originate from this reservoir on Godavari.
The project also envisages generation of 960MW of hydro power, drinking water supply to a population of 28.50 lakh in 611 villages.
Godavari River
India’s second longest river after the Ganga and drains the third largest basin in India.
Its source is in Trimbakeshwar, Nasik, Maharashtra.
It flows east draining into states of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha and ultimately empties into Bay of Bengal.
It is also known as the Dakshin Ganga.
The major left bank tributaries include the Penganga, Wardha, Wainganga, Purna, Pranhita, Indravati, and Sabari River, and the major right bank tributaries are Pravara, Manjira, and Manair.
Seven mouths of Godavari: (Godavari becomes) Tulya, Ātreyi, Bharadvāja, Gautamī, Vṛddhagautamī, Kauśikī and Vaśiṣṭhaa and then passes into sea.
Together they are referred as Sapta Godavari and the Godavari river before splitting is referred as Akhanda Godavari.
