Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)

• NPCIL is a Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

• It was set up in 1987, under the Companies Act, 1956

• NPCIL is tasked with the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of nuclear power reactors.

• The Atomic Energy Act of 1962 in India prohibits private companies from building nuclear power plants on their own.

However, in the recent Union Budget 2024-25, the government announced to partner with the private sector to develop Bharat Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and research and develop newer technologies for nuclear energy.
