NPCIL is a Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.
It was set up in 1987, under the Companies Act, 1956
NPCIL is tasked with the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of nuclear power reactors.
The Atomic Energy Act of 1962 in India prohibits private companies from building nuclear power plants on their own.
However, in the recent Union Budget 2024-25, the government announced to partner with the private sector to develop Bharat Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and research and develop newer technologies for nuclear energy.
