NIA is the central counter-terrorism law enforcement agency of India mandated to investigate all the offences affecting the sovereignty, security and integrity of India.
It was constituted under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act 2008 in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack.
NIA is administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The agency is empowered to deal with terror related crimes across states without special permission from the states.
Various special courts have been notified by the Government of India for trial of the cases arising out of offenses committed in various states.
NIA (Amendment) Act 2019
It empowers the NIA to probe terror attacks targeting Indians and Indian interests abroad.
Investigation can also be conducted in other offences such as human trafficking, circulation of fake currency, manufacture and sale of prohibited arms, cyber terrorism etc.
