The mugger, or marsh crocodile, is one of 24 living crocodilian species.
Native to freshwater environments, it inhabits marshes, lakes, rivers, and man-made ponds.
In India, it is found in 15 states, with substantial populations in the middle Ganges basin (Bihar and Jharkhand) and the Chambal basin (Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan).
The mugger crocodile's range extends across South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and southeastern Iran.
IUCN status: Vulnerable
included in CITES Appendix I.
