Article 324
It is a set of guidelines released by the Election Commission before elections in order to ensure free and fair elections.
Art 324 - Empowers the Election Commission to oversee elections to the Parliament and state legislatures.
It is applicable from the date on which the election schedule is announced until the date of the result announcement.
It currently does not have any statutory backing
Some of the important codes are:
Usage of caste and communal feelings to secure votes, criticizing candidates on the basis of unverified reports, bribing or intimidation of voters, etc. are prohibited.
From the time elections are announced, the government must not announce any financial grants, or promise any construction of roads, provision of drinking water, etc.
Ministers or the party in power shall not make use of the official machinery for election work.
The election manifesto of parties shall not contain anything against the ideals and principles enshrined in the Constitution
Recently the Election Commission has announced certain restrictions on opinion and exit polls.
