It's an autonomous legal institution founded under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Tribunal comprises 21 impartial members, chosen through a secret ballot by the States Parties to the Convention. Each State Party has the opportunity to nominate a maximum of two candidates.
The Tribunal holds authority over disputes regarding the understanding or implementation of the Convention and any other agreements that grant jurisdiction to the Tribunal.
Issues concerning the Convention may involve the delineation of maritime boundaries, navigation, marine resource conservation and management, marine environmental protection, and marine scientific research.
The Tribunal is accessible to States and international organizations that are parties to the Convention, known as States Parties.
The Tribunal is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany.
