The International Energy Agency (IEA) is a forum of 31 countries within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), focused on energy issues at an international level.
India joined the IEA as an associate member in 2017 and has sent a formal request for full membership in October 2023.
Lithuania was the 31st member to join in 2022.
The IEA was founded in 1974 following the 1973-1974 oil crisis, with the primary objective of assisting its member countries in managing significant disruptions in oil supply—a responsibility it continues to uphold to this day.
In 2015, the Agency expanded its focus to energy security beyond oil, engaging with major emerging economies, and placing increased emphasis on clean energy technologies, including energy efficiency.
