The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, which consolidates various acts and orders previously managed by different Ministries and Departments concerning food-related issues.
FSSAI was created to establish science-based standards for food items and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, is the administrative ministry responsible for implementing FSSAI.
The Government of India appoints the Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
