Categorisation of Human Values

Different scholars and philosophers have proposed different categorizations based on their perspectives. Some common ways of categorising human values are the following.

Social values

Pertain to the way individuals interact with others in society.

Cooperation, respect and tolerance.

Spiritual values

Related to beliefs about the meaning and purpose of life, as well as the connection to something greater than oneself.

Inner peace, self-discovery and transcendence.

Cultural values

Specific to particular societies or groups, and influence norms within that culture.

Tradition, heritage and rituals.

Personal values

Individual beliefs and principles that guide an individual’s choices and actions. 

Ambition, creativity, and freedom.

Economic values

Relate to the importance placed on wealth, financial success, and material possessions.

Profitability

Humanitarian values

Focus on promoting the welfare and alleviating the suffering of others, especially those in need or crisis

Compassion, Investment

Environmental values

Concerned with the relationship between humans and the environment.

Sustainability, conservation and ecological awareness.

Aesthetic values

Related to beauty, art, and appreciation of aesthetics in various forms such as music, literature, and visual arts.

Beauty

Political values

Involve beliefs about governance, power, and the organization of society.

Democracy, equality and freedom of speech.

Educational values

Pertain to the importance of education, knowledge, and intellectual growth.

Knowledge

Health and well-being values

Related to physical and mental health, well-being, and the importance of leading a balanced lifestyle.
