COURAGE OF CONVICTION

Published on 19 Nov 2025

Courage of Conviction in civil service refers to the willingness of government officials to uphold their beliefs, principles and values, even in the face of challenges. It involves making decisions based on what one believes is right, just and in the best interest of the public, regardless of potential consequences.

Examples of Courage of Conviction

  • Whistleblowing: A civil servant uncovering corruption within their department and reporting it to the appropriate authorities, even if it means exposing powerful individuals or risking backlash.

  • Upholding Rule of Law: A police officer refusing to bow down to political pressure to release a person who is under investigation for a serious crime.

  • Environmental protection: A bureaucrat taking a stand against an influential industrialist who wants to bypass environmental regulations, in order to protect the environment and local communities.

  • Equality and social justice: A civil servant advocating for the rights and welfare of marginalized communities, even if it involves challenging deeply entrenched societal biases.

  • Transparent governance: A government official insisting on transparency and accountability in the allocation of public funds, even if it creates tension with colleagues or superiors who want to maintain a lack of transparency.

  • Inclusive policies: A civil servant advocating for inclusive policies that benefit all sections of society, rather than catering to a specific group’s interests.

  • Resisting political pressure: An administrative officer making decisions based on merit and public interest, even when it’s not aligned with the wishes of political leaders.

Demonstrating courage of conviction is essential for maintaining the credibility and integrity of civil services. It helps prevent corruption, promotes good governance and ensures that the system serves the interests of the public above all else.
