The Technology Mission on Coconut (TMOC) was launched by the Government of India in 2001 and aims to enhance coconut production, improve processing technology, and promote diversified products to increase the profitability and sustainability of the coconut sector.
Key Strategies:
Integrated Pest and Disease Management: Implement comprehensive pest and disease management programs in regions like the Malabar Coast, focusing on controlling major threats such as the Red Palm Weevil and leaf rot disease through biological and chemical interventions.
Development and Promotion of High-Yielding Varieties: Introduce and promote high-yielding and drought-resistant coconut varieties, ensuring better adaptability to local conditions and higher productivity.
Modernization of Coconut Processing: Upgrade processing facilities in coconut-growing regions like Kerala, with a focus on improving the efficiency and quality of products like copra, virgin coconut oil, and coconut water through advanced processing technologies.
Promotion of Coconut-Based Value-Added Products: Encourage the production of value-added coconut products such as coconut sugar, activated carbon, and coir, aiming to diversify income sources and enhance marketability.
Impact of the mission:
Improved Pest and Disease Control: Significant reduction in crop losses in the Malabar Coast due to effective pest and disease management practices, leading to increased coconut yields and farmer income.
Higher Coconut Yields: Adoption of high-yielding varieties in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, resulting in a notable increase in per hectare productivity and enhanced resilience to climate stress.
Enhanced Product Quality: Modernized processing units in Kerala have led to better-quality coconut products, making them more competitive in both domestic and international markets.
Diversified Income Streams: Increased production of value-added coconut products providing farmers and entrepreneurs with new opportunities for revenue generation and contributing to overall growth of industry.
