Makhana

The Bihar government has requested the Centre to declare an MSP for makhana (Euryale ferox), also known as fox nuts or phool makhana, an aquatic crop.

This is primarily grown in Bihar’s Mithila region, which produces 90% of India’s supply.

Makhana, part of the Nymphaeaceae family, is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties.

Declaring an MSP would support farmers and promote cultivation.

• In 2021, Mithila Makhana received Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognizing its regional importance.
