National Saffron Mission

Published on 12 Mar 2025

It was launched in 2010 to revive and boost saffron production in India, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, which is known for producing some of the world's finest saffron.

Key Strategies:

  • Improvement of Soil Health and Irrigation Infrastructure: Implement soil rejuvenation programs and establish drip irrigation systems in the saffron fields to address soil water scarcity issues, ensuring better crop growth and yield.

  • Introduction of High-Quality Saffron Corms: Distribute disease-free and high-yielding saffron corms to farmers, promoting the rejuvenation of old saffron fields and enhancing overall productivity.

  • Post-Harvest Management and Processing: Set up modern post-harvest processing units in the Kashmir Valley to improve the drying, packaging, and storage of saffron, ensuring higher quality and longer shelf life of the produce.

  • Promotion of Saffron-Based Value-Added Products: Encourage the development of saffron-based products such as saffron oil, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals, with a focus to enhance marketability and profit.

Impact of the mission:

  • Increased Saffron Yield: The adoption of improved soil and irrigation practices led to a significant increase in saffron yields, contributing to the revival of saffron cultivation in the area.

  • Enhanced Quality of Saffron: The introduction of high-quality saffron corms resulted in better crop health and higher-quality saffron, meeting both domestic and international standards.

  • Improved Market Value: Modern post-harvest processing in the Kashmir Valley has led to the production of superior saffron with enhanced colour, flavour, and aroma, fetching higher prices in the market.

Diversification of Income Sources: The promotion of saffron-based value-added products has opened new avenues for income, supporting local economies and reducing dependence on traditional saffron sales.
