National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology

Published on 12 Mar 2025

It was launched in 2014 as part of the broader efforts under the 12th Five-Year Plan to modernize Indian agriculture. The mission aims to strengthen agricultural extension services through technology-driven approaches, improving the delivery of timely and accurate information to farmers.

Key Strategies:

  • Capacity Building in Precision Agriculture: Provide extensive training on precision farming technologies like Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing to farmers in high-tech farming zones such as the Punjab-Haryana belt.

  • Deployment of IT-Enabled Extension Services: Implement mobile-based advisory services and digital platforms in regions to facilitate timely agricultural advice and weather forecasts.

  • Strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs): Enhance the capabilities of KVKs in regions like the Western Ghats to support localized research and technology dissemination tailored to the region’s unique agro-ecological conditions.

  • Advanced Input Management Techniques: Train farmers in water-stressed areas like Marathwada on integrated nutrient and water management practices to optimize resource use and improve yields.

Impact:

  • Widespread Adoption of Precision Technologies: Increased use of precision agriculture in the Punjab-Haryana belt, leading to optimized input use and higher crop productivity.

  • Timely Decision-Making: Improved agricultural decision-making due to IT-enabled services, resulting in better crop outcomes.

  • Localized Research Impact: Enhanced agricultural productivity in the Western Ghats due to region-specific research and technology dissemination by KVKs.

  • Resource Efficiency: Improved water and nutrient use efficiency, leading to sustainable agricultural practices in a water-scarce region.
