National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture

Published on 11 Mar 2025

Launched in 2010, the NMSA aims to promote sustainable agriculture practices and enhance climate resilience.

Key Strategies:

  • Integrated farming systems: Promoting the cultivation of multiple crops together to optimize land use and reduce dependence on external inputs.

  • Soil health management: Implementing practices like soil testing, balanced fertilization, and organic matter addition to improve soil fertility and structure.

  • Water use efficiency: Promoting efficient irrigation techniques, such as drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation, to reduce water wastage.

  • Climate-smart agriculture: Adopting practices that help farmers adapt to climate change, such as drought-tolerant varieties, crop diversification, and agroforestry.

  • Natural resource conservation: Implementing measures to conserve soil, water, and biodiversity through practices like contour farming, cover cropping, and agroforestry.

  • Technology adoption: Encouraging the use of modern technologies, such as precision agriculture and remote sensing, to improve agricultural efficiency and sustainability.

Impact of the mission

  • Water Efficiency: Significant water savings in dry regions through the adoption of micro-irrigation systems.

  • Improved Soil Fertility: Enhanced soil fertility in areas practicing organic farming, leading to higher crop yields.

  • Increased Farmer Resilience: Greater resilience to climate change impacts in regions using climate-resilient crops.

  • Diversified Income: Farmers in agroforestry regions enjoy diversified income streams, reducing their dependency on a single crop.
