Jute Technology Mission

The Jute Technology Mission (JTM) was launched in 2006 by the Government of India with the aim of modernizing the jute industry, improving productivity, and enhancing the quality and marketability of jute products. 

Key Strategies:

• Development and Dissemination of Improved Jute Varieties: Promote high-yielding and disease-resistant jute varieties ensuring better crop resilience and higher fibre quality to meet industry standards.

• Upgradation of Jute Processing Technology: Modernize jute mills in key jute-producing areas such as the Kolkata region by introducing advanced retting and spinning technologies, which reduce processing time and improve fibre quality.

• Promotion of Diversified Jute Products: Encourage the production of diversified jute products like geo-textiles and packaging materials in regions like the Hooghly district, focusing on value addition and expanding market opportunities beyond traditional uses.

• Farmer Training and Extension Services: Provide extensive training programs to jute farmers on improved agronomic practices, including water management and pest control, to enhance productivity and sustainability.

Impact of the mission:

• Enhanced Jute Productivity: Significant yield increases due to the adoption of improved jute varieties, leading to a more stable and profitable jute farming sector.

• Improved Fiber Quality: Better quality jute fibre produced in the Kolkata region as a result of modernized processing technologies, leading to higher market value and greater competitiveness in global markets.

• Expanded Product Range: Increased production of diversified jute products in the Hooghly district, creating new income streams for jute mills and contributing to the growth of the jute industry.

• Sustainable Farming Practices: Adoption of improved agronomic practices, resulting in better water management, reduced environmental impact, and more sustainable jute cultivation.
