Integrity Versus Honesty

Honesty and integrity are both important ethical values that relate to a person’s behaviour and character. While they are closely related, they have distinct meanings and implications.

  • Similarities

    • Truthfulness: Both honesty and integrity involve telling the truth and being transparent in one’s actions, words and intentions. They both require a commitment to avoiding deception and falsehood.

    • Trustworthiness: Both qualities contribute to building trust in relationships, whether personal or professional. People tend to rely on individuals who demonstrate honesty and integrity.

    • Ethical behaviour: Both honesty and integrity align with ethical principles and moral standards. They guide individuals to make decisions that are morally right and just.

    • Consistency: Both values require consistency in behaviour. Being honest and having integrity means acting the same way in various situations, regardless of external influences or potential benefits.

Primarily focuses on telling the truth, avoiding lies, and being straightforward in communication. It relates to how one presents information to others.

Encompasses a broader spectrum of ethical behaviour. It involves maintaining a strong moral compass, doing what’s right even when no one is watching and adhering to principles consistently.

Internal vs. External

Is often more externally oriented. It is about being truthful to others, whether in conversations, transactions or interactions.

Is more internally oriented. It involves a sense of personal accountability and self-reflection, ensuring that one’s actions align with their values and principles.

Intent

Primarily deals with providing accurate information and not misleading others. It is about the accuracy of the information shared.

Focuses on the overall character of a person and their commitment to doing what’s right, regardless of the potential consequences.

Wholeness

Can be practiced selectively. A person might be honest in certain situations but dishonest in others.

Is more holistic. It reflects an individual’s consistent behaviour across all situations, and is regarded as a foundational trait that encompasses honesty.


Although honesty and integrity share common elements, integrity goes beyond honesty by emphasizing a person’s complete adherence to ethical principles, while honesty alone might not fully capture their character. Both qualities are essential for fostering trust, respect and ethical behaviour in personal and professional relationships.
