Cyberspace and Women
In 2021, over 20% of registered cybercrimes in India were directed at women, signalling discriminatory challenges faced by this demographic within the cyber realm. The various forms of issues faced by women in cyberspace are
Cyberbullying: Women frequently face online abuse for their opinions which can have emotional and psychological impacts on women.
Example: Swara Bhasker’s twitter harassment for expressing her opinions on social issues.
Sharing of obscene content: The circulation of obscene images and videos taken/spread without the knowledge of the women may cause trauma to that person.
Example: Bois locker room incident.
Online stalking and doxxing: Online stalking involves intrusive monitoring and tracking of individuals, while doxxing involves revealing personal information publicly to incite harassment or harm.
Revenge porn: Non-consensual sharing of intimate images or videos can lead to humiliation, reputation damage, and emotional distress for women.
Catfishing: Women may experience online impersonation where someone creates fake profiles using their identity, leading to confusion and potential harm.
Online extortion and blackmail: Criminals may engage in online extortion by threatening to expose personal or sensitive information unless a woman complies with their demands.
Government measures to address the issue
The Indian government has taken several measures to prevent and address cybercrimes against women, recognizing the importance of ensuring their safety and well-being in the digital realm.
Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children scheme: To check the increasing cybercrime against women and to raise awareness. Cyberdost has been selected as the brand name for all communication and awareness materials.
National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: An online platform where individuals can report cyber-crimes and also facilitate tracking of cyber incidents.
Online harassment reporting mechanisms: Social media platforms are required to provide mechanisms to facilitate online reporting of cyber-crimes against women.
Cybercrime cell: Many states in India have established dedicated cybercrime cells and helplines to address online harassment and cyberbullying against women.
Fast track court for cybercrimes: Some states have established fast-track courts to expedite the trial of cybercrime cases, including those involving harassment and violence against women.
