Public service: Actions or work that are performed for the benefit and welfare of the general public. It involves providing essential services, implementing policies and carrying out tasks that contribute to the well-being and common good of society.

Public servant: An individual who works for the government or a governmental organization, and carry out various responsibilities that help maintain order, provide services and support the functioning of government institutions, with a focus on the best interests of the public, rather than personal gain.

The Expected Role of a Public Servant

The expected role of a public servant is to serve the best interests of the public and the community and uphold high moral standards while performing their duties. This includes the following:

• Services: Public servants are expected to deliver essential services that meet the needs of the community, while prioritizing the well-being of all.

• Implementing policies: They work to implement government policies and programs effectively, ensuring that laws and regulations are followed for the benefit of the public.

• Lawfulness: Public servants are expected to adhere to ethical standards and uphold the law while respecting civil rights and freedom.

• Transparency and accountability: Expected to be transparent and take responsibility for their actions, decisions and their impact on the public.

• Listening to the public: Public servants should listen to the concerns, feedback and needs of the public, and strive to address them in their work.

• Problem solving: They need to identify and address community issues and challenges, working towards finding solutions that benefit the public.

• Effective communication: Public servants need to communicate clearly and effectively with the public, colleagues and stakeholders to ensure transparency and understanding.

• Emergency response: During crises or emergencies, public servants are expected to manage and respond to situations to protect the well-being of the community.

• Integrity: Expected to act honestly and transparently, avoiding conflicts of interest and corruption.

• Impartiality: Public servants should treat all individuals fairly and without favouritism, regardless of personal biases.

• Respect: They need to value diversity, listening to the public’s needs, and showing respect in interactions.

The role of a public servant revolves around serving the public’s interests with honesty, fairness and a commitment to improving the lives of the people, while maintaining their trust.
