World Soil Health Index

• UNESCO introduced the ‘world soil health index’ at the International conference on Soils held at Agadir, Morocco.

• The index will help to standardise measures for analysing and comparing soil quality in different regions and ecosystems

• UNESCO states that a staggering 90% of the planet’s land surface could be degraded by 2050.

• It quoted the World Atlas of Desertification (released by the European Commission and UN Environment Programme), which said that 75% of soils are already degraded, directly affecting 3.2 billion people.
