  •  India became the first country to prepare a checklist of its entire fauna, covering 1,04,561 species.
  • The ‘Fauna of India Checklist Portal’ was also launched on the occasion of the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata on the sidelines of the second Animal Taxonomy Summit-2024.

  •  The checklist includes the habitat, endemism, significance, listing in IUCN red list, CITES list, Wildlife protection Act data among others.
  • The ZSI was set up by British zoologist Thomas Nelson Annandale, in 1916, as the premier taxonomic research organization in India based in Kolkata.
