In the northern regions of Kerala and certain areas of Karnataka, a traditional folk-dance ritual known as Theyyam or Kaliyattom is practiced.
In the neighboring Karnataka's Tulunadu region, a comparable tradition called Bhuta Kola is observed.
Many Theyyams are considered manifestations of either Shiva or Shakti, with profound connections to these primary deities of Hinduism.
Out of roughly 456 recognized varieties of Theyyams, the tradition is predominantly upheld by male performers, except for the Devakkoothu Theyyam, the sole ritual featuring female participants.
The initial part of the performance, known as Vellattam or Thottam, involves ceremonial dance, a chorus, and musical instruments like Chenda and Elathalam.
