The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a large-scale atmospheric disturbance that travels eastward around the equator, primarily over the warm waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is characterized by an eastward propagation of a band of enhanced convection (rising air) and cloudiness, followed by a region of suppressed convection.
MJO consists of two parts or phases. Strong MJO activity often dissects the planet into halves. One half within the enhanced convective phase and the other half in the suppressed convective phase.
Phases of MJO
Enhanced rainfall (or convective) phase: Winds at the surface converge, and the air is pushed up throughout the atmosphere. At the top of the atmosphere, the winds reverse (i.e., diverge). Such rising air motion in the atmosphere tends to increase condensation and rainfall.
Suppressed rainfall phase: Winds converge at the top of the atmosphere, forcing air to sink and, later, to diverge at the surface. As air sinks from high altitudes, it warms and dries, which suppresses rainfall.
Periodicity of MJO
Eastward Propagation: The MJO is characterized by eastward-moving bands of enhanced and suppressed convection (cloud formation and rainfall) that circle the globe in the tropics.
Phases: These bands progress through eight distinct phases during their cycle, each associated with specific patterns of cloud cover and precipitation.
Variable Cycle Length: While the dominant period is around 40-50 days, the MJO's cycle can range from 20 to 90 days. This variability stems from interactions with other climate phenomena like El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).
Factors influencing MJO periodicity
Ocean-Atmosphere Coupling: The interaction between warm ocean waters and atmospheric circulation plays a crucial role in driving the MJO. Changes in ocean temperatures or wind patterns can influence the cycle length.
Internal Dynamics: The MJO itself possesses self-regulating mechanisms that can affect its pace of propagation and overall cycle duration.
External Influences: Global climate patterns like El Niño and the IOD can interact with the MJO, modifying its intensity, propagation speed, and cycle length.
8 Stages of MJO
phase 1 - Rainfall develops over the western Indian Ocean
phase 2, 3 - Rainfall moves slowly eastwards over Africa, the Indian Ocean and parts of the Indian subcontinent
phase 4, 5 - Rainfall has reached Indonesia & West Pacific
phase 6, 7 & 8 - Rainfall moves further eastward over the western Pacific, eventually dying out in the central Pacific
Positive phase of the MJO, Indonesia and northern Australia typically experience increased rainfall, while eastern Africa and southern India typically experience decreased rainfall. MJO can increase the frequency and intensity of thunderstorms in the tropics.
Enhanced rainfall: MJO brings periods of enhanced rainfall as it progresses eastward across the tropical oceans. This can lead to increased precipitation, potentially causing floods in affected regions.
Suppressed rainfall: In contrast to enhanced rainfall, the MJO also brings periods of suppressed rainfall in certain areas. This can result in drought conditions, affecting agriculture and water resources.
Impact on monsoon: MJO has a significant impact on monsoon patterns, influencing the onset, intensity, and withdrawal of monsoons in various regions, particularly in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
Tropical cyclone activity: MJO is known to modulate tropical cyclone activity. It can either enhance or suppress the development and intensity of tropical cyclones in different ocean basins.
Teleconnections: MJO is associated with teleconnections, which are linkages between weather and climate patterns in different parts of the world. For example, MJO activity in the Indian Ocean can influence weather patterns in the Pacific.
Weather forecasting challenges: The MJO poses challenges for weather forecasting, especially for extended-range predictions. The eastward movement and variability of MJO events make their prediction challenging.
