International Initiatives for Regulating Trade in Wildlife

  • CITES: It was established to control global trade in threatened animal and plant species. 184 members of the international community, including the European Union, have ratified its framework. Framework includes

    • Regulations for the import, export, and re-export of listed species,

    • Establishment of certificates and permits

    • Creation of a list of species that are subject to trade controls

    • Prohibition of trade in certain species.

  • The Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network (TRAFFIC): It is a driving action to reduce illegal trafficking and enhance benefits to people from legal and sustainable trade of wild species. Priority areas include

    • Strengthening global policy

    • National policies and regulations

    • Empowering communities

    • Responsible supply chains

    • Responsible consumption.

  • Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants: It provides information needed for elephant range States and the Parties to CITES to make appropriate management and enforcement decisions and to build institutional capacity.

  • Convention on Migratory Species: It provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats.

  • International Union for Conservation of Nature: It is a global organization dedicated to protecting the world's plant and animal life. This is a significant global organization, particularly given the IUCN Red List.

  • Operation Clean Art: It is the first nationwide operation in India to combat the importation of mongoose hair conducted by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.
