India's Arctic Policy seeks to strengthen ties between the resource-rich and fast changing Arctic area and the nation. The region's environment is warming three times faster than the global average; therefore, the strategy also aims to protect it against climate change.
Objectives of Arctic policy
Strengthen National Capabilities in Science and Exploration: Enhancing scientific and exploration capacities, protecting the ecosystem and climate, and fostering commercial and maritime relations with the Arctic region are among the goals it seeks to fulfill.
Understanding the Impact of Climate Change in Arctic region: It aims to improve knowledge of how India's environment, economy, and energy security are affected by climate change in the Arctic region.
Linkages between polar regions and the Himalayas: Using information from science and traditional knowledge, it aims to investigate the connections between the Himalayas and polar regions.
Better Analysis of Arctic Ice Melting: It aims to advance improved forecasting, analysis, and coordinated policymaking about the effects of Arctic ice melting on India's strategic, military, and commercial interests in relation to international shipping lanes.
