Europeans started coming to India as traders by the end of the 15th century and eventually colonised entire South Asia by the mid-18th century. Like Mughals who influenced Indian culture with their styles like Persian Architecture and lifestyle, Europeans too have left their mark on Indian Art and Architecture.

  • Introduction of new architectural styles:

      • Example: Victoria Memorial in Kolkata

    • Gothic Revival Architecture: It was popular in Europe during the 19th century, is characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricate stone carvings reflect the Gothic influence on Indian religious buildings.

      • Example: The St. Thomas Cathedral in Mumbai.

    • Neoclassical Architecture: It is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman styles, exhibits symmetry, classical elements, and proportion.

      • Example: The Supreme Court of India in New Delhi in its majestic columns, pediments, and symmetrical design.

  • Use of new construction techniques and materials: European influence introduced modern construction techniques and materials to Indian architecture.

    • Example:  Large use of iron, steel, reinforced concrete for the construction of larger and more structurally advanced buildings.

  • Influence on public buildings and infrastructure: European influence can be seen in the design of government buildings, educational institutions, churches, and railway stations in India.

    • Example: Howrah Bridge in Kolkata

  • Transformation of urban landscapes: The introduction of town planning concepts, wide roads, and public parks influenced the development and layout of urban areas.

    • Example: Cities like Chandigarh exhibit modern town planning principles, including geometric layouts, wide roads, and open spaces.

  • Educational Institutions: Many educational institutions in India, particularly colleges and universities, were established during the colonial era with European-inspired architecture.

    • Example: IISc in Bangalore and the University of Calcutta reflects colonial architectural styles.

  • Restorations and Preservation: European interest in India's rich historical heritage led to the preservation and restoration of various ancient sites and monuments.

    • Example: ASI and British architects like Sir John Marshall were instrumental in preserving iconic structures such as the Ajanta and Ellora Caves.

European architectural influences, combined with local adaptations and creativity, have shaped India's diverse architectural landscape. The fusion of styles represents a captivating blend of cultural heritage in Indian architecture.
