Star Campaigners

  •  Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was recently appointed as a ‘star campaigner’ by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for its Gujarat campaign.
  •  A star campaigner is a high-profile figure, such as a politician, actor, or sports personality, enlisted by a party to seek votes. 
  • Political parties, whether recognized nationally or at the state level, can nominate up to 40 star campaigners, while unrecognised parties can nominate up to 20. 
  • The expenses incurred for the star campaigner are not included in a candidate’s poll expenditure.
  • As per the Model Code of Conduct, when a prime minister or a former prime minister is star campaigner, the expenditure incurred on security including on the bullet-proof vehicles will be borne by the government and will not be added to the election expenses of the party or the individual candidate.
