Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal, was recently appointed as a
‘star campaigner’ by the Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) for its Gujarat campaign.
A star campaigner is a high-profile figure, such
as a politician, actor, or sports personality,
enlisted by a party to seek votes.
Political parties, whether recognized nationally
or at the state level, can nominate up to
40 star campaigners, while unrecognised
parties can nominate up to 20.
The expenses incurred for the star campaigner
are not included in a candidate’s poll
expenditure.
As per the Model Code of Conduct, when a prime minister or a former prime minister is star campaigner, the expenditure incurred on security including on the bullet-proof vehicles will be borne by the government and will not be added to the election expenses of the party or the individual candidate.
