Gross Environmental Product Index

Published on 08 Apr 2025

  •  Uttarakhand has become the first state to launch a Gross Environment Product Index.
  • It not only calculates what services we get from the environment but also what we put back into the environment.
  • There are four pillars of the Gross Environment Product Index: air, soil, tree and water.  MGEP index = (Air-GEP index + Water-GEP index + Soil-GEP index + Forest-GEP index)
  • For instance, if we take Forest GEP, it counts the new trees planted, their types (e.g., broad leafed vs. pine), and their survival rates.
  • It also subtracts the number of trees cut down
